WINTER PEONY

 I went to a Winter Peony garden at Ueno in Tokyo. There were many peony flowers are in full bloom.

 上野東照宮の冬ぼたん苑にいきました。

We can see 5 storied pagoda alittle bit far in this photo.
 
遠くに五重塔が見えます。
 
 
 
It looks like warm inside the a straw house.

  3. Is it winter peony time again? Time passes so quickly. I can never decide what is the prettiest: the winter peonies under the straw protection, or the summer peonies under the paper umbrellas. Thanks for this reminder! I need to walk over there asap! :)

  4. ぼたんは今週末か、次の週末の19・20日あたりが見頃かと思ってましたが、もう綺麗に咲いてますね。びっくりしました。私も週末の3連休に行って見ますが、時間があれば鶴岡八幡宮のぼたん苑(500株)、時間が無ければ歩いていける上野東照宮(600株)に行って見ます。藁囲いにぼたんは絵になりますね。

       こんばんは。今年も先に行ってしまいました。ご容赦下さい。綺麗に咲いている花は割と少なかったです。
       今年の冬の寒さが影響しているのかと思いました。上野の牡丹、鶴岡八幡宮の牡丹のどちらがアップされるか期待して待ってます。

  6. Are those small hoods put there to protect the flowers from cold? It is very unusual. But i love the photos in your sidebar especially the waterfalls and fall photos.

      Thank you. There are a few winter peony gardens in Japan. Peonies would bloom in spring. Gardeners made them bloom in winter.

    I do grow peonies in our garden, but they bloom in early summer. As a gardener I am quite surprised to see the efforts made, to let peonies bloom right now.

      Thank you very much for your comment. The technics to let peonies bloom in winter developed from a few hundred year ago in Japan.
      It is said gardeners would cover each peony by straw house completely at night.

      こんにちは。お久しぶりです。冬ぼたんは春に咲くぼたんと同じ品種です。これを真冬に咲かせるのですから花にとっては迷惑な事の様です。
       ロウバイはもう多くの所で咲いていると思います。
       今頃の長谷寺は人が少なく楽しんでこれると思います。

  20. 冬牡丹、とてもきれいで写真うつりも抜群ですね。たいていの所では冬牡丹が栽培されていますが奈良県石光寺では、寒牡丹が見られます。葉をださず冬牡丹のような華やかさのない寒牡丹には、寒さの中で自然に花をさかせる凛とした姿に感動します。冬牡丹は温室と冷蔵庫で管理され、冬を春と思い咲いていると聞きました。もし、みのる様が牡丹なら、寒牡丹、冬牡丹、どちらがいいですか?

      こんにちは。寒牡丹をググって見てようやくその意味が分かりました。 素晴らしいです。勿論、寒牡丹の方が遥かに素敵です。
       我々の仲間には園芸種には一切興味ないと言う人もいます。花とは自然に咲くから花なのだという考えです。
